Thousands of years ago, people in Mesopotamia started to build cities and invent new things. They were some of the first people to use writing. The people of Mesopotamia wrote on clay tablets using a system called cuneiform. This helped them keep records, tell stories, and share important information.
Mesopotamians also made great progress in farming. Because the land was very dry, they built irrigation systems to bring water from the rivers to their fields. This helped them grow more food like wheat and barley. With more food, the population grew and cities became larger.
The people who lived in Mesopotamia built strong temples and large buildings called ziggurats. These were places where they believed they could talk to their gods. Religion was an important part of their daily life, and each city had its own special god or goddess.
Mesopotamia was also known for its trade. People traded things like grain, cloth, and pottery with other nearby groups. They even used the first currency to buy and sell goods. Because of all these discoveries, Mesopotamia is often called the "cradle of civilization."
