Football, also known as soccer in some countries, is the most popular sport in the world. Millions of people enjoy playing and watching this exciting game every day. However, football has a long and interesting history that started thousands of years ago.

Ancient cultures in China, Greece, and Rome played early ball games for fun and exercise. In ancient China, people played a game called Cuju over two thousand years ago. Players kicked a leather ball filled with feathers into a small net without using their hands.

Modern football developed in England during the nineteenth century. Before that time, different schools had different rules for ball games. Some players carried the ball with their hands, while others only kicked it. In 1863, leaders from English clubs met in London to create official rules. They decided that players could only use their feet, head, and body to move the ball. Only the goalkeeper could touch the ball with hands.

In 1904, an international organization named FIFA was founded in Paris to organize international matches. Later, in 1930, Uruguay hosted the very first World Cup tournament. Today, teams from almost every country compete in the World Cup every four years. Football continues to bring people together from all around the globe.
