How People Lived in 15th Century London

In the 15th century, life in London was very different from today. The city was much smaller, but it was crowded, noisy, and full of activity. Around forty thousand people lived there, and a big wooden wall protected the city from outside dangers.

Houses were made of wood and plaster, with soft straw spread across the floors. Because the houses were built very close together, dangerous fires happened often. Streets were dark, narrow, and muddy. There were no indoor bathrooms or pipes for clean water. People threw garbage and dirty water into the streets or into the River Thames, so the city smelled quite bad.

Most people worked hard from morning until night. Men worked as tailors, blacksmiths, or merchants selling goods at busy outdoor markets. Women cooked meals, washed clothes, and cared for their children at home. Children did not have many fancy toys, but they played simple games together in the streets.

Life was not always easy, but people also enjoyed special days. On holidays, rich and poor citizens gathered together. They listened to music, watched colorful plays, and shared big feasts with their neighbors. London was a busy, fast world where working together as a community was necessary for everyday survival. Today, we can still see old buildings from this exciting period in history.
